Robert Parker

18.5/20 Drink 2015-40

A big event this, the showing of the latest vintage en primeur at the château (currently being renovated by new owners LVMH). Sandrine the oenologist and Pierre Lurton the manager have much to be proud of. This lively gold nectar has a super-powerful nose that comes leaping out of the glass, with just a hint of lemon oil from the Sauvignon (a full third of the blend this year) on top of the great whack of barley sugar richness of Semillon underneath. There is the most viscous pear juice sensation, good acidity, still some astringence and a great weight with a lovely fresh finish. Very persistent.

All wines sold by MAX come direct from the Chateaux and have been stored in professional storage facilities in Bordeaux since the time of bottling.

Château Yquem-1er Cru Classé Supérieur en 1855-Appellation Sauternes
Château Yquem The infinite care and attention lavished on Château d'Yquem's outstanding terroir, consolidated over the centuries by the Lur Saluces family, earned the estate the unique rank of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification. Producing wine at the top classified growth in Sauternes is a challenging proposition. Yquem is highly commendable in that it takes great pains every step of the way - from the vineyard to the cellar. As an illustration of this unrelenting attention to detail is the meticulous way the grapes are harvested – in several waves – when only individual grapes, as opposed to whole bunches, affected by Botrytis cinerea are chosen. This microscopic fungus works a marvellous alchemy, adding special aromas and flavours that utterly transform the wine. Château d'Yquem is owned by the luxury group LVMH and headed by Pierre Lurton who also runs Château Cheval-Blanc.
