89 Drink 2007 - 2021 Attractive cassis aromas jump from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged 2004. While elegant, medium-bodied, soft, and broad in the mouth, it is slightly superficial, without the broodingly deep, backward, muscular personality of this estate’s wines prior to 2001. Given its flavor profile and softness, the 2004 will have wide consumer appeal if drunk over the next 10-14 years. 16 Drink 2013-18 Sweet nose lacking a bit of zest, a bit stale on the nose, though relatively fleshy on the palate. An easy drink without an excess of tannin. Needs just a bit more zip. Quite stodgy. No hint of the spiciness that is characteristic of the property. 89-91 A well-defined nose, with a touch of green pepper and earth. Very traditional, slightly rustic in style. The palate is sweet and supple, for me lacking a bit of structure to support the fruit: this should come with barrel ageing. Open and expressive, a good rather than great Lynch Bages, though a bit diffuse on the finish. Tasted April 2005. |

Château Lynch Bages was owned by the Lynch family for three quarters of a century. Their ancestor, John Lynch, a young Irishman from Galway was exiled from his country in 1691. In the 18th century, Count Jean-Baptiste Lynch, Mayor of Bordeaux, inherited the estate and handed over management to his brother Michel Lynch, who was also Mayor of Pauillac during the French Revolution.Jean-Charles Cazes, highly respected in the Médoc for his experience in viticulture and winemaking, bought the property in 1934. With his son André, he devoted all his energy to Lynch-Bages for more than 35 years. In 1974, his grand-son Jean-Michel set about restructuring the estate. Situated at the gates of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary from the crest of one of the most beautiful gravel ridges of the commune, the vineyards lie on gravelly slopes located on the south and south west extremities of the town.
