17.5+ Drink 2017-30 [51 hl/ha; M 13%, CF 11%, M 76%; 60% new oak; 34% of the crop] Dark crimson. Lively topnotes of a confident wine with a seriously long term future ahead of it. Very concentrated but some almost sweet, treacly fruit on the front palate and then very fine tannins. Lots built in there but well integrated. Dry tannins but very fine. Not exaggerated. A good difference in drinking dates between this and the second wine Clos du Marquis but not of style. Very bright fruit. Real life. Good for the year. Needs lots of time. |

The past twenty five vintages are a testimony to Jean-Hubert Delon’s passion and discipline. Within the St Julien appellation, irrespective of the year, his wines are unquestionably the best. Léoville Lascases is a truly exemplary Bordeaux property that also offers a second wine, Clos du Marquis, which easily rivals many others.
Clos du Marquis takes its name from the small “clos” (walled) vineyard situated close to Chateau Léoville and actually dates back to the end of the 19th century. Owner, Jean-Hubert Delon takes great care to separate the viticulture and vinification of both wines. Since 1989, Clos de Marquis has consistently improved and should no longer be considered as a “second wine” – it is now a top Saint Julien that commands status and respect in its own right.
