ASSEMBLAGE: 66% CABERNET FRANC, 34% MERLOT
La très forte intensité de la robe rappelle le cassis écrasé tant la couleur est profonde. Le nez qui s’ouvre à l’aération est dominé par des notes de fruits noirs, de mûres et de myrtilles, encadré par un boisé bien intégré. Ce Cheval Blanc est puissant et racé. L’attaque est suave et ronde, avec des tanins enrobés et denses qui évoluent en un somptueux bouquet de fruits éclatant de fraicheur avec des notes délicates de cachou en final. Ce vin, à la très grande longueur, incarne à la perfection la synergie entre le Cabernet Franc et le Merlot.
Robert Parker – 90/100 Drink 2010-2025 Eighty thousand bottles of 2004 Cheval Blanc were produced from a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. Subtle herb, menthol, cranberry, black currant, and licorice aromas emerge from this dark ruby/plum-colored wine. It is medium-bodied and elegant with plenty of sweet fruit, but not a lot of weight or intensity. The complexity and nobility of Cheval Blanc’s gravelly terroir is apparent in this delicate, subtle St.-Emilion. Give it a few years to develop additional aromatics, and drink it over the following 12-15. Jancis Robinson – 18,5/20 Drink 2014-2028 [CF 55%; M 45%; average yields 45 hl/ha; grand vin represents 50% of total production; third wine, 27%, also produced] Very deep, purplish crimson. Much more reticent on the nose than the second wine Petit Cheval. Deep flavours with some floral notes. Extremely round, supple tannins and impressive depths of undeveloped flavour with lovely appetising dry tannins (as opposed to a drying, rasping finish) - truly winemaker Pierre Lurton's "cashmere" tannins. Round, intense mulberry flavours. Quite insistent, ripe tannins on the finish. Relatively gentle and the vintage with the most recognisable Cheval character of recent years. Great balance, savoury and rather playful. Lots of fruit and well-hidden tannins. Good freshness without any excess of acidity.Drink 2014-28 Neal Martin – 92+/100 Drink 2015-2025 I had high hopes for this Cheval Blanc out of barrel, perhaps a return to form? I still think this is a very fine Saint Emilion although it has not quite fulfilled the promise it initially showed. A very deep ruby/garnet colour. The nose seems to be quite backward with the Cabernet Franc component in the driving seat, aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, dark chocolate and iron rust. Good definition. The palate displays firm tannins, a rather “edgy” Cheval Blanc, quite tight and bashful; minerally and hints of burnt toast on the surprisingly dry finish. I will be more parsimonious with my score, but something tells me that it could put on weight over the next 5-6 years. Drink 2015-2025+ Tasted November 2008. |

Pierre Lurton, the manager of Cheval Blanc, ushers us to his office, where we are immediately subjugated by a breathtaking view of the vineyard through large windows. Cheval Blanc is an unquestionably outstanding estate. Above and beyond its location and climate, which give the wine – especially its tannin - a sublime flavour, the people who work here love what they do and seek to do it in the best way possible, with extreme attention to detail.The present day Cheval Blanc estate had vines at least as far back as the 18th century, as shown by Belleyme’s map of the region dated 1764. Nearly a century later, the estate was adquired by the Fourcaud-Laussac Family, who owned it until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and the Baron Albert Frère.
Château Cheval Blanc has had a greater number of outstanding vintages than any other classified great growths over the past century.
This admirable wine is powerful, soft, rich, round, and silky. It has tremendous fruit and elegance as well an exceptional quality from year to year. This timeless wine is like no other.
A a reflection of the Grand Vin, Petit Cheval is racy, elegant and very long in the palate. The Cabernet Franc makes here all the difference in terms of concentration and aromatic precision. The texture is as silky as Cheval Blanc and the tanins are as fine !
